RainVault - Innovative Rainwater Harvesting Initiative for Potable water in Barmer with Ambuja Cements

Partnering with SLB India & Ambuja Cements, I launched RainVault: an initiative to build & install 120 circular water storage tanks for 8 villages in Barmer, Rajasthan: an extremely water-scarce region.

The goal of the project was threefold:

  • Provide an avenue for potable drinking water

  • Ensure minimum community disruption (w/ new technologies) to ensure adoption

  • Ensure potable water has a sustainable and efficient lifecycle maximizing scarce resources by installing slanted pipes for ease of water delivery

We used chemical agents such as Calcium Hypochlorite & Activated carbon filters for water storage for a longer duration. Additionally, since mold was beginning to accumulate in the square underground tanks over longer periods of time, I advocated for the change to circular tanks, since mold tends to be formed in corners. This has allowed for the villagers to store clean water for months more!

During this project, I worked closely with a group of 50-80 women in the villages, conducting workshops not only on rainwater harvesting but also on women’s rights, and empowering them to generate income through activities like making and selling Bajra cookies.

Many women in the community are still subjected to patriarchal norms, and our workshops were also about helping them build self-confidence and reclaim autonomy.  We spent months working with the villagers, understanding their struggles with both water scarcity and contamination, and implementing practical rainwater harvesting solutions.
